Hi, I’m dutch and my german sucks… sry. I hope you guys can help me out in english. You’ve got loads of topics about the problem buy i dont understand a lot of it.

Im trying to find out what the problems are when mounting a S3 Dash… I have an A3 8L 1.8T (1997) I dont have the board computer and can get an S3 dash with board computer for hardly any cash. The guy selling it has a adapter for it to work in an A3 (he sais…) but trying to understand your topics… i gues it wont work? Is there anything I can do to make it work or is it useless?

The biggest problem is the immobilizer, because there are different types and you need the correct one. Further, the second series has
already a can bus system.

Hmm okay, new tacho → new imobilizer, so keys have to be re programed. And a 97 A3 doesnt have CanBus, so i would need the old one if it would be possible at all…
The immobilizer/key problem… isnt that something the dealer can fix? They can make new keys for a car, so i gues they can fix the imobilizer problem too? or isnt it that easy?

How can I see the difference between the 2 types of tacho? (canbus or not canbus?)

The immobilizer has two parts, the first one is located in the instrument cluster, the second one iss located in the engine controller. Further there are different keys.
So it isn´t easy the change the instrument cluster especially at the first series, because the a3 was born 1996 and the s3 1999.

With or without can bus, you can see at the part number.
xxx.919.xxx → no can baus
xxx.920.xxx → can bus

Hmmm… okay… It isn’t easy?.. or it’s impossible? What would the trick be to get it to work.

It’s the one without canbus, so i’m lucky there. next problem, how to get the immobilizer to work along.

Impossible iss nothing :slight_smile:

There are some users, who mounted the old instrumental cluster invisible behind the dashboard, only for the immobilizer and so they have the s3 instrumental cluster and no problems with the immobilizer.

By the way - there are 3 types of immobilizers Category 1, 2 and 3. The first Audi S3 sould have already Cat. 2 and the first A3 Cat.1, so you can see that this is a problem with your a3.
